Blog Structure Summary:

This article will provide the necessary information that will allow you to expand your audience and thus create more traffic to your site which in turn will result in avid and faithful readers.

Find out about the 3 types of blog readers out there and how you can capture their attention with an easy to follow design structure for your blog article.

I am assumming you already have an interesting topic for your blog article so all you need to do know is ho to structure it in such way that is “read-ready” for everyone.

These 3 categories are:

Skimmers

Scanners

Detailed readers (some might call them anal retentive…)

Let’s review how every one of them would read your blog:

Skimmers

This type will do just that – skim through your text, then stop and focus only on parts that attract their eye. A 2 column blog is crucial for attracting this type of readers. Use pictures and graphics that not only relate to your article but also give an interesting touch to the entire theme. They will stop at conclusions and/or bullet lists but mainly they will decide within (plus or minus) 4-7 seconds if you are worth reading or not so try grabbing their attention within that window of opportunity.

How to attract skimmers:

Bold and or bold italic text

Bold colors (no – yellow on a white background do not qualify)

Bullet lists

Pictures and graphics

Conclusions (if they are on the top part of their screen)

Use 2nd column to summarize the essence (make them bold and/or bold-italics)

Note: Refer to light blue areas in the figure attached.

Scanners

Scanners do not have time to read. They want the essence, bullet list(s) and conclusion. They will scan for any of these elements and move on to the next best thing if they cannot find or figure out the structure of your article. This type of reader are in general in a hurry to digest as much as they can within 10 seconds of their time. If the article is interesting enough they will bookmark it. Keep them in mind when building your blog article and you will gain them as true readers of your site.

How to attract scanners:

Bullet lists

Summaries

Conclusion

If they can find these 3 elements easily they don’t really care for colors, bold or italics

Note: Refer to light green areas in the figure attached.

Detailed Readers

These guys will skim, scan and read every comma you have in your text. They will point out any little grammar or punctuation mistake. They will even comment about it if you give them the chance. Make sure you have these areas covered. They will also care about your page structure, how easy for the eye and if you can entertain them with a picture or not. Conquer their needs and you will add an army of avid followers to your blog.

How to attract detailed readers:

Impeccable grammar and punctuation

Easy to follow the theme of your article

Allow them to comment

Create a CAL (Call to Action)

Note: Refer to light orange outline in the figure attached.

Conclusion:

Cater to all 3 types of blog readers – you want to gain as many followers as you can and build a fan base. Get them used to your style and they will know every time what to expect from you.
